First is it whisky or whiskey? Here’s the answer! In the early years of production, Ireland added an ‘e’ to distinguish their product from the Scottish version in the American market. The influx of Irish immigrants meant America adopted the same spelling. Today with Single Malt Scotch Whisky recognised as the world’s leading whisky, every other country has opted for the original spelling.
So you want to explore the world of whiskies, but unsure where to start? Well only one way to find out. You need to explore your way through the many choices and find the most suitable for your palate. First you need to know the different flavours whisky can have – light and floral, fruity and spicy, rich and rounded or full bodied and smoky which are all highly influenced by the production process.
Production process which influences the final product:
1. Distilleries – the location, craftsmanship and skill of the people and even the shape of the room can contribute to the character and flavour.
2. Peat – whether the distillery burns peat to dry its barley will have a dramatic influence on the final product.
3. Fermentation – the length of time the liquid is fermented will affect the final flavour.
4. Distillation – small still mean more contact with copper whereas larger stills mean a heavier, meatier flavour.
5. Maturation – whether it’s European or American oak cask, whether toasted for reuse plays a part.
Now with that initial understanding, you can explore further. We’ve gone ahead and created some notes for you on a few popular whiskies, to assist in finding your favourite.
